There is a quality to New Zealand architecture that is hard to define. It is often modest - an exercise in restraint and material honesty - yet always attuned to the view. Patchwork Architecture captures this beautifully in our cover house, quietly resolving the brief with warmth and tactility.

Fouche Architects drew on a similar sensibility in the renovation of a home in the rainforest of northern NSW, retaining much of the existing structure while gently reorienting the house towards the landscape and emphasising natural materials.

In Brisbane, where the traditional Queensland vernacular is lightweight and deeply shaded, architect Peter Besley instead applied principles learnt while travelling in the Middle East to create a masonry home that’s cool and breezy.

Meanwhile, further south in Ulladulla, Ironbark House by Studio Carson Kelly responds sensitively to its site through muted tones, while The Sociable Weaver applied biophilic principles in the design of a 9.5-star home on Victoria's Bass Coast.

We profile the work of two women exploring the connection between gardening and Indigenous culture and visit an urban backyard that has been regenerated with a loose and flowing landscape for both wildlife and people.

We also travel to a festival that brings together farmers, scientists, ecologists, health practitioners and others engaged in regenerative agriculture.
