London, 3rd November 2025

Exact Editions Launches Expanded Set of Illustrated Periodicals for Digital Subscription

Digital platform Exact Editions has expanded its roster of illustrated archives with the launch of six newly digit-ised titles, now available for both individual and institutional subscriptions. Subscriptions include fully searchable access to each title’s complete archive across web, iOS and Android, with each publication capturing a vivid snapshot of the social, cultural, and political landscape of its time.

The new titles, which join The Illustrated London News, The Illustrated War News, The Graphic & The Sphere are:

- Britannia & Eve (1929-1957): Two legendary titles (Britannia and Eve) were brought together in 1929 and the resulting magazine was notable for its coverage of women in art, sport, literature and lifestyle, also featuring notable women writers.

- The Bystander (1903-1940): A protégé of The Graphic, The Bystander was a weekly satirical magazine designed to look at the ‘lighter side of life’. Each issue was packed with political satire, topical drawings, illustrations, cartoons and short stories, along with reviews of sport, travel, motoring and society news, all carried out with a characteristic, tongue-in-cheek humour.

- The Illustrated Sporting & Dramatic News (1874-1970): Catering for an increasing enthusiasm for sport-ing and leisure pursuits by the upper and middle classes, The Illustrated Sporting & Dramatic News fo-cussed on pastimes ranging from cricket, tennis, rugby and rowing and equestrian sports to theatre and the arts.

- The Tatler (1901-1965): Advertised as the “lightest, brightest and most interesting Society and Dramatic paper ever published”, The Tatler was a weekly aimed at the British upper classes and regularly featur-ing articles on fashion, the arts, opera, cinema, debutante balls, society events, and the sporting calendar.

- London Life (1965-1966): Swooping onto the scene in the 60s at a time of great cultural and social change, this glossy magazine presented a radical scene of fashion and culture, where key figures of the day appeared in their bohemian splendour, including Mick Jagger, Bob Dylan, Marianne Faithful, Marc Bolan, John Lennon and Omar Sharif.

- The Sketch (1893-1959): Created and published by the Illustrated London News, The Sketch embraced British high society and what we know now as the celebrity lifestyle with a focus on fashion, the arts, theatre and everything royal, through sumptuous photography and illustration. The publication was the first to feature short stories by Agatha Christie.

Art Monthly and Jacobin Amongst Seven New Titles Selling Perpetual Access Subscriptions through Exact Editions

Seven new titles - 3x3, Art Monthly, Jacobin, Catalyst, Mekong Review, The Capilano Review and The New World - have joined the expanding roster of over 50 magazines that offer libraries the opportunity to purchase lifetime access to their archives and ongoing issues through Exact Editions.

This subscription model, named Perpetual and Ongoing Access (POA), allows libraries to guarantee stable and permanent access to a publication’s archive and ongoing issues for a one-time fee in partner-ship with preservation archive Portico. As well as offering libraries significant long-term cost benefits and uninterrupted access throughout technological developments, POA also assists publishers in bolstering revenues and fostering relationships with prestigious institutions.

The newly added titles span a rich spectrum of subjects:

- 3x3: The only publication in the world devoted to contemporary illustration, whose mission has been to preserve, protect, and has promoted illustration in all its forms since 2003.

- Art Monthly: The UK’s leading magazine of contemporary visual art that has consistently offered informed and highly readable coverage of the British and international art scene since 1976.

- Jacobin: The widely respected ‘leading voice of the American left’, published since 2011, con-tains era-defining writing on left politics and strategy, theory, culture, international affairs, and critical historical analysis.

- Catalyst: The peer-reviewed academic journal published by Jacobin since 2017, which brings the most advanced scholarship on political economy, labor, political theory, organizing strategy, and historical research to a mass audience.

- Mekong Review: The quarterly English-language magazine of arts, literature, culture, politics, the environment, and society in Asia, written by people from the region or those who know it well.

- The Capilano Review: The Canadian contemporary writing and visual art journal dates back to 1972 and serves as a dynamic space where art, poetry, fiction, and interviews converge and interact.

- The New World: The weekly magazine - which includes all issues of its previous iteration of post Brexit pop-up The New European launched in 2016 - provides well informed political analysis, in-depth reporting and bold ideas.

See all titles available for Perpetual and Ongoing Access subscriptions here.

Daryl Rayner, Managing Director of Exact Editions, said: “By adding a POA option in addition to annual subscriptions, these publishers are assisting libraries in ensuring continuity of access to important resources during uncertain times, as well as securing the preservation of their own content for generations to come.”

Illustrated Rivals: Exact Editions Provides New, Fully Searchable Window into The Illustrated London News, The Illustrated War News, The Graphic & The Sphere

London, 15th September 2025

History scholars, students and enthusiasts alike can browse, search and read over 14,000 issues of four of Britain’s most influential illustrated newspapers, published between 1842 to 2003: The Illustrated London News (ILN), The Illustrated War News (IWN), The Graphic & The Sphere. Digital platform Exact Editions are offering IP-authenticated, multi-user subscriptions to these dynamic resources to libraries internationally. Offering a unique window into Victorian and Edwardian society, as well as documenting the defining events of the 20th century, the new digital editions are fully searchable and can be seamlessly accessed across web, iOS and Android devices through digital platform Exact Editions.

The four titles are intricately intertwined as historic competitors and collaborators in the realm of illustrated journalism. The ILN (1842 – 2003) was a revolution in journalism and defined visual reporting of the era through its vivid chronicling of the lives and times of royals, politicians and society at large. The IWN (1914–1918) originally published as a supplement to the ILN, was established during the First World War to provide focused, detailed visual coverage of the conflict. The Graphic (1869 – 1932) was first created as a direct rival to the ILN under the guidance of social reformer William Luson Thomas. Its issues captured authentic scenes across London, the wider UK and around the world, reflecting Britain’s attitude to empire and society. The Sphere (1900-1904) was subsequently created as a rival to both the ILN and The Graphic at the height of the Boer war, with extensive coverage of world events to aim the publication at British subjects overseas.

The Exact Editions platform presents the detailed illustrations, diagrams, advertisements and editorials of all four archives in high definition, capturing the distinct visual identity that set these titles apart. A powerful search function allows readers to instantly locate references to key historical events and figures, while every page includes advanced accessibility features such as a ‘Read Aloud’ option and a plain text version for enhanced readability.

Annual or Perpetual and Ongoing Access subscriptions are available for libraries in Exact Editions’ institutional shop:

The Sphere

The Illustrated War News

Gary Thorpe from Consolidated Archives Holding Ltd (CAHL) commented: “Our collaboration with Exact Editions has breathed new life into these pioneering titles. It’s a unique opportunity for us to reach the platform’s engaged audience of librarians around the world. Subscribers to the archives will experience British history as it unfolded during a period of unprecedented social, political and technological change.”

Daryl Rayner, Managing Director of Exact Editions, has said: “These titles are so much more than newspapers; they are fascinating visual chronicles of over 160 years of history. The platform’s search function can be used to pinpoint references at the click of a button; something that would have taken weeks with physical archives. We are delighted to have transformed these important historical materials to such useable and discoverable resources.”
