The Journal of Australian Ceramics (JAC) is Australia’s most widely read tri-annual contemporary ceramics magazine. Formerly known as Pottery in Australia (PIA), the magazine was first published in May 1962 (Vol 1, No 1).

The JAC is a 128–160 page, full colour, contemporary ceramics journal. It is a valuable resource for professional and amateur ceramicists, teachers and students at all levels, galleries, arts administrators, curators, buyers and collectors. It contains artist profiles, commentary and critical essays, exhibition and book reviews, information on tertiary ceramic education, workshop reports, technical advice, suppliers, new products, exhibition and gallery listings.

CAN I MAKE CERAMICS OUT OF THAT?

Our theme for this issue of the Journal – TOOLS & TRADITIONS – feels both timeless and particular. Like many things that are timeless, familiarity can make them almost invisible. How can thinking or rethinking through these things help us care for a better future? As usual, when unpacking any theme in a single issue of the Journal, we can only really start to scratch the surface; there is so much more to be considered beyond these pages.

Why are we making things? What stories are we sharing? Where, and with whom? Some traditions sing very recognisable songs, others hum along to different tunes. We are free to reconsider our stories at any time, change, move backwards, stay still, or sing differently.
