As the world leader in its field HALI – the name means carpet in Turkish – has become the centre of the textile world for curators, collectors, dealers, enthusiasts, academics and experts since it started in 1978. Described as “the benchmark against which all other art publications measure their quality”, HALI is an international quarterly magazine of exceptional style that has become essential reading for the amateur and the connoisseur alike.
Through its in-depth articles and international reporting HALI covers the textile arts of all cultures and periods offering the reader a unique and multilayered insight into the nature and history of nations through their woven arts.
As the glue that holds the international rug and textile art market together, HALI plays a pivotal role in the field of carpets and textiles by leading trends, tastes and opinions as well as promoting the business through its comprehensive editorial coverage. HALI also offers a number of Textile Tours annually as well as publishing books.

HALI 226 celebrates the V&A East Storehouse, where the public can view artefacts from the museum’s collection by appointment. In Oxford, a Pitt Rivers Museum project similarly offers improved access to its textile collection, as well as enhanced conservation. An exhibition at MITA in Brescia aims to foster wider appreciation of Chinese carpets, while an Art Institute of Chicago show investigates how textiles sustain belief and help us cope with grief. Other exhibitions covered include Kashmir ‘moon shawls’ from the TAPI Collection displayed in Ahmedabad, a Sheila Hicks event in Paris, and a Yale University show where an unusual 14th-century ikat—the single loan exhibit—is the subject of intense study. Eight 19th-century paintings, sold in October for over £1 million, give detailed insight into Kashmiri shawl-making, while gaps in our knowledge of thigma, tie-dyed woollen cloths, are filled in by Tibetan temple paintings. Plus we look at Tajik bridal face coverings, the British dyestuff ‘Turkey red’, and a new book based on Michael Mandapati’s kilim collection, which supplies our cover image.
