London Life swooped onto the scene in 60s London at a time of great cultural and social change, capturing the essence of the time with impact and style from October 1965 to December 1966. Though short lived, the magazine had great visual and editorial impact, with articles and items on key figures and issues of the day, from music to politics, current affairs, art, work, health and sport.
The glossy and colourful magazine was notable for its guide to the entertainment scene, including cinema, theatre, food and drink, shopping, night life, music, and sport. There was a lively letters page where current topics were reflected and debated, including books, crime, sexuality, fashion and social mores. Restaurant reviews reflected cultural influences and tastes for international cuisine and flavours, of India, Italy, France, the Caribbean and beyond.
London Life presented a radical scene of fashion and culture, where key figures of the day appeared in their cultural and bohemian splendour, including Mick Jagger, Bob Dylan, Marianne Faithful, Marc Bolan, John Lennon and Omar Sharif. Contributors and articles were chosen for their renown, insights and opinion, giving fresh perspectives on the city and its national and global influence. This included the editor Mark Boxer, also of The Sunday Times, articles on ‘Loving - London Style’ by Charlotte Bingham, the first factual article on the drug LSD, a focus on the 'darling' actress Julie Christie, the 'ancient' Art of Drag, and a rare interview with Brian Epstein.
This was a publication aware of its reach and reflection of the swinging scene, "where the world looked to the capital for the lead in virtually everything... a vintage year for London Life, which in every direction, strove to fulfil its task of reflecting all aspects of life in the city." London Life, 31 December, 1966.
