To inform progressive politics, we need writing that goes deeper than journalistic commentary — writing that’s free of jargon and relevant to the challenges facing people fighting for a different world. That is why we started Catalyst, the scholarly journal published by Jacobin.
After decades of depoliticization, critical discussion of capitalism is no longer off the table. Catalyst journal combines scholarly rigor with close attention to the questions confronting organizers today. Our goal is to bring the most advanced scholarship on political economy, labor, political theory, organizing strategy, and historical research to a mass audience, and to revive the tradition of radical intellectual production for the pursuit of a society without exploitation. We don’t have the luxury of flabby ideas and airy abstractions. To win power, our thinking has to be clear, strategic, and rigorous.

These essays outline key constraints on social democracy, weigh the possibility of a new popular front to help transform the Left back into a genuine mass movement, and clarify key dynamics of market socialism.
