Water. It’s been making headlines for the last year, whether it’s too much or too little. This issue looks at water, from the impact of rainfall on water quality, soil erosion and biodiversity to how it’s possible to farm with little water, namely in desert regions and cities. Peatland habitats have an amazing capacity to hold water and reduce flooding, but so many have been drained. Megan Welford and Patrick Laurie discuss crucial peatland restoration in Scotland. Ben Raskin tackles the controversial topic of farming without soil and if it would ever be possible for hydroponic and other soilless systems to be certified organic. Sustainable water management is critical in the United Arab Emirates, where there has been a shift towards organic food production. Michael Wale reports on his visit to an innovative organic farm in the desert. Within the technical section, we look at sustainable development goals, ruminants and carbon footprints, managing potato crops during a drought and ways of boosting diversity on arable land.
